Joey P. San Nicolas, the former acting chairman of the Northern Marianas College Board of Regents, has recommended the appointment of public defender Janet H. King to replace him on the board.

In his resignation letter to Gov. Benigno R. Fitial, San Nicolas stated that King is a practicing attorney from Tinian “who possesses the education, drive, and commitment to help the board fulfill its constitutional and statutory duties.”

“I believe Ms. King will be an excellent addition to the NMC Board of Regents,” he stated.

San Nicolas resigned from his position as regent effective May 1, 2008. He said the decision to resign was not an easy one.

“However, I feel that given recent events in my personal life, particularly as they relate to my health and family matters, I feel it is important that I focus my time and energy on my family and my health at this time. I will cherish the time I spent on the Board of Regents,” San Nicolas said.

King, who is a native of Tinian, said that she and San Nicolas had earlier spoken at length about her taking on the regent position to represent Tinian.

“I would be very happy to represent Tinian in that capacity,” King said.

Press secretary Charles Reyes said the governor will be making new appointments as needed.

“We will be announcing an appointment once a decision has been made. Again, we welcome recommendations and community feedback for nominations, which should be directed to the SAA [State Administering Agency],” Reyes said.

If King were to serve on the Board of Regents, the process is for Tinian Mayor Jose P. San Nicolas to recommend her to the governor, the governor would then appoint King, followed by a confirmation process with the Senate.

Joey San Nicolas said he would like to thank the governor and members of the CNMI and Tinian leaderships for giving him “the opportunity to serve on such an important board.”

“I would like to also take this opportunity to ask all CNMI leaders to continue to assist Northern Marianas College as it works on its accreditation matters. Finally, a big thanks and best wishes to my colleagues on the board and the entire NMC community,” he added.

Charles Cepeda is currently serving as the acting chair of the Board.
