Several organizations and concerned citizens participated in the DEQ Plant A Tree – Beach Cleanup activity held Friday, April 25.

Some 200 coconut trees, fan palms, foxtail, and hibiscus trees were planted along the coastlines of Paupau, Tanapag 13 Fishermen, Kiliki, Lali 4, and San Antonio beaches.

Trees fight soil erosion, conserve rainwater, and reduce water runoff and sediment deposit after storms. Trees, also, absorb and lock away carbon dioxide.

This year’s theme, ‘Reefs enrich our health, our wealth, our lives’ and so DEQ, together with its partner organizations conducted a variety of activities to demonstrate that every act counts (no matter how small) and that each act can also protect our reefs.

In addition to the planting, participants removed over 1000 pounds of debris.

Special thanks to Seventh Day Adventist School, Palms Resort Saipan, NMC-CREES, DLNR -Agriculture, DLNR Parks and Recreation, Saipan Mayor’s Office, Bureau of Environmental Health, NRCS, MVA, CRM, World Resort Saipan, Historic Preservation Office, DPW, Paseo de Marianas (PDM) Promoters and Pacific Islands Club for taking an active step in protecting our natural resources.

The planting and cleanup was part of DEQ’s environmental awareness celebration. (DEQ)
