Saturday sign-up for women’s football spring league
Registration for the spring season of the Women’s Football League will be held on Saturday, May 3, from 9am to 11am at the CPA Field in Dandan.
Female players who have already registered should also be present to attend their first team practices. The cost of registration is $20 for the whole season.
Women’s Football Committee director Francine Sablan said the women’s spring season will run from May to early June to accommodate players who will leave the island to spend their summer vacation either in the mainland or in another country.
Games will be played every Saturday mornings and Tuesday evenings with the first scheduled match on May 10.
Sablan said female players who saw action last fall have the option to remain in the same team or transfer to another squad. New players will be assigned their team assignments on Saturday.
“All women interested in playing in the league, including returning players or beginners, should attend Saturday’s practice which starts at 9am at CPA,” said Sablan.
Sablan added the four participating teams from last season would carry the same team name. The four participating teams this season will be led by defending champion Wild Bill’s Wild Fire, runner up Marianas Eye Spectacular Blues, Pacific Islands Club Paradise In Cleats, and the Smith’s Bella Ballers.
Lindsay Davis and Patty Coleman will remain co-captains of the Wild Fire, while Brenda Schultz and Divya Sharma will be returning co-captains for PIC.
The Spectacular Blues will now be led by new captain Becca “The Wall” Newman, who is fresh from her impressive goalkeeping duties in the CNMI Women’s National team’s scoreless draw against Guam in the 2nd Marianas Cup on Saturday.
Newman replaced former captain Morgan Rose, who left Saipan recently. The Ballers will also have a new set of captains in the person of National team members Katie Peters and Nikki Gabaldon.
Last season, the Wild Fire scored a 1-0 win over the Spectacular Blues via the golden goal rule in the finals.
