Subway helps send NMI reps to nat’l Mathcounts
Subway Investments Corp. has donated $1,000 to Mathcounts to help defray the cost of sending the top four students who will represent the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands in the national competition in Denver, CO.
Martha Camacho, Mathcounts state coordinator said she is grateful for the support from Subway. She said Subway has been a consistent provider of financial donations to Mathcounts through the years.
“We appreciate this. We are very thankful,” Camacho said. “It’s nice to have some people in the community helping us, and Subway has been very generous,” she added.
Marcos Fong, Subway managing director, said the company is always happy to support Mathcounts and similar educational programs.
“One of the priorities of our Group is to support the education of our next generation. This is one of the ways we give back to the community’s educational efforts,” Fong said.
The donation was made on April 25 at the Subway office in Gualo Rai, during which Camacho presented a Mathcounts certificate of recognition to Subway.
Subway, along with Coca-Cola Beverage Co. (Micronesia), Inc. and Foremost Foods provided snacks and drinks for the participants to the chapter and CNMI-wide competitions held respectively on Feb. 16 and March 15 at the Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio Multipurpose Center in Susupe.
Last year, Subway also donated $1,000 to Mathcounts, which was used to likewise help pay for the cost of sending four local students to the national competition held in Texas in May.
Jennifer Sablan, Mathcounts secretary, said the four students who would be competing in the national event this year were Jessica Im Lee, 14, of Marianas Baptist Academy; Sung Hoon Ham, 14, and also of MBA; Feng Liang Lizama, 13, of Mount Carmel School; and Hyeon Joon Jun, 13, of Saipan International School. The students would be accompanied by their coach, Ramiro H. Trinidad, MBA principal.
She said the team would leave the CNMI on May 6; the competition is scheduled for May 9 to 11. Sablan said the air fare and accommodation of the team were estimated to cost $15,000. (PR)
