Rota school needs a better leader
I read with great interest the various letters to the editor about a petition to oust Lynne Michael, the principal of Rota High School. I graduated from Rota High School two years ago, and I find it necessary to take a stand so that the education of RHS students remains a priority. If the board members have the best interests of the students in mind, then I request that they heed the petition and remove Mrs. Michael as principal.
Mrs. Michael lacks basic leadership and professional skills. As a former RHS student, I have firsthand knowledge of her antics. On countless occasions, she was belligerent, incredibly to a level found only in a dictator.
While serving as principal, Mrs. Michael would disparage students, including myself, in front of the entire class. I still remember clearly my classmates’ discontented faces after receiving stinging words from Mrs. Michael. She would publicly humiliate and ridicule students. These were not isolated occasions but they are the norm under her administration. How does this behavior show compassion and concern for a student’s emotional well-being and self-worth?
She made a teacher cry after yelling at her in the classroom in front of students. What does this say about respect and leadership? Her actions caused a well-respected teacher to retire. How does this reflect professionalism? She cancelled a prom because of one student’s mistake; never mind that a prom makes high school a more memorable experience. How does that show fairness and balance? There are many more issues and facts that I can mention, but the point is that her actions have now caused parents to be concerned about their children’s development and success.
During their 180 school days each year, high school students need a professional, effective and fair leader for a role model. Unfortunately, Mrs. Michael is not suitable for the role. She should leave her post for the sake of the students and faculty.
