DanDan Elementary School students are currently being assessed through Basic Reading Inventory to determine their progress in reading comprehension and actual school level.

According to DES principal Jonas Barcinas, the students have been showing progress in their reading comprehension and that he is proud with the dedication the teachers and staff are putting into educating each student.

The DES Reading Program and Book Fair is also still ongoing, Barcinas said. “We will be having our Reading Mania Carnival for our students who have read many pages.”

DES is aiming to reach its goal of 200,000 pages read.

Barcinas said the students are encouraged to read on a daily basis and that it has been a huge help in making the students realize the fun and the importance of reading.

Also, DES third grader Naomi Lizama, who was the overall champion for the K-3rd category of this year’s Public School System CNMI-Wide Science Fair Competition will be leaving next week for Guam for the Regional Competition.

The whole school all wish her luck at the competition, Barcinas said.

He added that, “As the principal of DES, I must admit that our kids are doing very well academically. We are so proud of our students for their hard work and bring home the pride and joy. It sure puts us on the spotlight when our kids shine in any competition.”

DES is also announcing its Teacher Appreciation Week this upcoming May 4-8.

According to Barcinas, the student council, the Parent Teacher Association, and the administration are planning some treats to make the teachers feel special.

Barcinas said the activities for each day include “Monday is apple, fruits, hunk for your teacher. Tuesday is leis, flowers day. Wednesday is appreciation letters and hugs for the teachers. Thursday is Chocolate and candies day. Friday is small fiesta appreciation for them.”

He added that, “Everyday they [teachers] will be treated with breakfast goodies and coffee in the office before they report to their classes. We also plan on putting an appreciation board for them so all the students can write how they feel about the teachers. We will post their pictures on the board as well.”

“DES focuses highly on academics because of the AYP that we are required to meet as a school but we also want our students to be well rounded in each subject. No child is left behind with such opportunity,” Barcinas said.
