Kids of all ages invited to Friday story hour
Learn more about our natural resources with a story hour at the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library every Friday from 3pm to 4:30pm.
This new activity was initiated a couple of weeks ago by Micronesia Challenge Intern, Semona Igama. Igama said she wanted to bring her Micronesia Challenge outreach to children of all ages and a library is a great place of learning outside of the classroom.
According to Igama, the topic changes each week, but each story hour also includes activities and other inter-active demonstrations and possibly some small give-away items like posters, placemats, word-find puzzles, coral reef magnets, etc.
Community organizations like Marianas Dive and Mariana Islands Nature Alliance as well as government entities Coastal Resources, DEQ and Fish and Wildlife have teamed up to enhance their environmental outreach to school children and library goers.
Future topics include turtles, coral reefs, diving, brown tree snakes, water quality, and many more.
The schedule for the next 5 weeks is as follows:
April 25 – CRM Coral Reef Program/RARE Pride Campaign
May 2 – DFW Turtle Program
May 9 – Micronesia Challenge
May 16 – Marianas Dive
May 23 – Mariana Islands Nature Alliance – Coral Reefs
Last Friday, Reina Camacho, DEQ’s public information officer, read “Earth Day” a young book about waste reduction and recycling at the school and village level.
The Micronesia Challenge aims to effectively conserve 30% of the near-shore marine resources and 20% of terretial resources across Micronesia by the year 2020. The challenge is supported by the chief executives from the Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Republic of Palau, Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
