Two WASC officials visit NMC
Two representatives of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges arrived yesterday for a one-day visit with the Northern Marianas College.
Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges president Dr. Barbara Beno and ACCJC Commission member Floyd Takeuchi were on island to meet with NMC officials and government officials.
According to NMC president Dr. Carmen Fernandez, “the discussion would be focused on NMC-WASC related issues.”
NMC officials, Beno, and Takeuchi were scheduled to meet with Senate President Pete Reyes later in the afternoon but did not show up.
E-mails and phone calls to NMC officials were not been returned as of press time.
NMC submitted the March 15 special report last month, updating the accrediting agency on the school’s progress in addressing deficiencies noted in the college’s fiscal year 2006 financial reports.
The audit findings were part of the concerns raised by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges, which placed NMC on “show cause” status in January 2008.
NMC’s special report, dated March 15, 2008, lists the 14 financial statement findings and states the steps taken to address each of them.
A separate report, NMC’s Show-Cause Report, due Oct. 15, 2008, is expected to demonstrate that the institution has resolved the recommendations and concerns as identified by the 2000 and 2006 visiting teams.
