The 4th Annual Mahi-Mahi Fishing Derby will set sail tomorrow, April 19, from Smiling Cove Marina.

Organizers said that between 30 to 40 boats and over 100 anglers from Saipan, Tinian, and Rota are expected to take part in the 2008 edition of the event.

Trolling will be employed as the type of fishing for the event, where top prizes in five different categories are at stake. First to fifth place finishers will be recognized in the mahi category.

The one-day 2008 edition of the Mahi-Mahi Fishing Derby will start promptly at 6am and will conclude at 5pm the same day. Event organizers are reminding participants that no catch could be weighed in and entered after the 5pm deadline.

The registration fee is $100 for one captain and three crewmen with $25 assessed for each additional angler.

Pre-registration is set for today, April 18, from 4:30pm to 6:30pm at the Smiling Cove Marina (weighing station).

Derby officials from the Saipan Fishermen’s Association will briefly explain the rules and regulations of the competition.

Interested applicants may pick up the 2008 Mahi-Mahi Fishing Derby registration forms at the Marianas Visitors Authority, Best Fishing, and the Fishing Tackle.

Last year, the crew of the San Juan II reeled in the biggest fish of the 3rd Annual Mahi-Mahi Fishing Derby.

The boat, captained by Lolito Donaire with angler Errol Moises, caught a 24.75-lb. monster mahi to collect the $1,500 cash purse.

The St. Patrick had the second biggest fish of the derby, as captain Tony Maestro and angler Manding Legaspi unloaded a 24.35-lb. mah-mahi at the Smiling Cove Marina. Maestro and Legaspi collected $1,000 for all their troubles.

Third place went to the crew of Another Girl who reeled in a 22.9-pounder for the $500 third place purse. The boat was captained by Sheldon Fernandez and its angler was Ben Tabin.
