DES proud of Science Fair champs
Dandan Elementary School is very proud of its participants in the first ever PSS/CNMI-wide Science Fair Competition.
All four DES participants came away winners in their category.
Naomi Lizama, a third grader from Ms. Church’s class, won the overall for K-3rd Category.
Joshua Mostales, Joshua Mendiola, and Jeffery Centino (2008 Spelling Bee Top 10 Speller in Guam) also won awards at the competition.
“As the principal of DES, I must admit that our kids are doing very well academically. I am so proud of our students for their hard work and for bringing home the pride and joy. It sure puts us on the spotlight when our kids shine in any competition,” said DES principal Jonas Barcinas.
He stressed that DES focuses highly on academics because of the AYP that the school is required to meet as a school “but we also want our students to be well rounded in each subject. No child is left behind with such opportunity.”
Barcinas expressed his thanks to the school’s leadership team—Mercedes DL Guerrero, Kate Borja, Charina Hocog, their parents, teachers—for their support in one way or another.
“Not just that, the kids did a lot of researching and studying. As young scientists, they amaze me because they truly know their project inside out. They all focus on their project, which focuses on how their project is going to be useful in the CNMI or community,” said Barcinas.
Just before the event, Barcinas said he and vice principal Kintol brought the four students into the office to prep them about what to expect during judging time.
“We tried to help them to be mindful, mentally alert, and be calm when talking to the judges. We told them that we know they are going to do well but if not, we are still going to be proud of them for representing our school, The Home of the Tottot.”
