NMI seeks $1.1M for govt desk audit
The Commonwealth is seeking a million-dollar federal grant to conduct a comprehensive audit of government positions.
Finance Secretary Eloy S. Inos told a legislative committee yesterday that the grant application was submitted to the U.S. Department of the Interior in February 2008.
The plan, he said, is to hire an independent team of management analysts to review the functions of government agencies and make recommendations as to how personnel should be allocated to do the job.
“The team will be able to look at the positions from a professional standpoint. It’s different from simply conducting an in-house desk audit,” Inos said.
In addition, he said, the project will look at the jobs available in the private sector and provide recommendations on the kind of training that should be given to government workers transitioning into the private sector.
Inos also said the government plans to move forward with the program as soon as DOI provides the money. The CNMI has asked for about $1.1 million for the desk audit.
Rep. Tina Sablan said she was encouraged by the plan, and called for cooperation among all branches of government.
A desk audit is expected to reveal inefficiencies, duplication, and under-utilized resources in the government.
