Two CUC power engines overheat, trigger outages
Two power engines at Power Plant I in Lower Base overheated, triggering outages in some areas on Saipan yesterday morning and in the afternoon.
The outages began at 10:18am when the jacket cooling water system in engines No. 2 and 6 sounded the alarm, prompting the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. crew to reduce production at both engines.
CUC Power Division acting manager Gary P. Camacho told Saipan Tribune that Al Santos of Power Plant I power generation informed him that some load needed to be taken from the island grid. As a result, power supply to some laterals or streets were taken offline.
Camacho said the outage affected the Gualo Rai area from 11:25am to 11:40am. From 11am to 1pm, the blackout was at the Taro Sue area. From 11:04am to 1:23pm, the outage occurred in Upper Miha. From 10:35am to 12:34pm the outage was in Upper Chinatown and from 10:18am to 12:46pm, the outage was in the Kannat Tabla area.
With respect to CUC’s need to produce $2 million for the fuel supply at Power Plant 1 until the end of this week, Camacho said the dollar amount is still being discussed with the administration.
“The executive director is still trying to pursue the funding and he is hopeful that that problem will be resolved soon by the administration,” Camacho said.
