11 kids join first XTEARRA triathlon
Eleven kids in three age divisions joined the season’s first XTEARRA triathlon, which took place last Saturday at the Marianas Resort and Spa grounds in Marpi.
Saipan Swim Club coach Michael Stewart, who helped organize Saturday’s race, said the 11 kids enjoyed the fun but challenging course that has steep hills.
“Bikers were forced to walk [and] we even had a great bike crash. These kids can now truly say “I am an XTEARRA athlete.”
Kento Akimaru topped the 8-and-under division with a combined swim-bike-run time of eight minutes and 16 seconds, while Steven Goodwin came in second completing the course in 11:23.
The relay team of Kazumi Otake and Pia Tenorio finished second behind Akimaru when they came in at 8:20. They had a swim-bike-run time of 2:46, 3:29, and 2:05.
Maxi Braig continued to dominate the 9-10 division with a course record of 15:04, while Andrew Kimball finished second in 15:29 with Misaki Cramer coming in at third, 17:36.
Bryce Daly, who crashed in the bike course, finished in 19:27. He had a 3:55 swim, rode the bike course in 10:33 before completing the race with a 4:59 run.
Nuri Gutzwiller bested Andrew Johnson and Jack Sharer in the 11-12 division.
Gutzwiller blitzed to a new course record of 12:29 to finish 1:55 ahead of Johnson, 14:14. Sharer was a distant third with a combined time of 18:04.
The 8-and-under course is divided into a 100m swim, 400m bike, and 300m run, while the 9-12 division followed a 200m swim, 800m bike, and 400m run.
Stewart said he is thankful for all the volunteers who helped him organize the race. He also thanked Pacific Islands Club for donating the prizes for the awards and Marianas Resort for the use of the course.
The next kids race will be on May 3, Saturday, at the American Memorial Park while another one will be scheduled in June.
