NMC hosts counselors’ conference
As part of its ongoing efforts to educate the community about the different programs and activities offered for high school students and graduates, the Northern Marianas College recently hosted a conference for the CNMI’s high school counselors.
“The conference was a great opportunity for counselors like me to gain an in-depth insight about NMC’s programs and services,” said Cherlyn Cabrera, a counselor at the Marianas High School. “We are now in a much better position to knowledgeably and adequately advise our students about the many programs geared for them at NMC.”
The counselors were welcomed by NMC President Dr. Carmen Fernandez, who spoke about the college’s accreditation status and its efforts to obtain accreditation reaffirmation. After the president’s welcoming remarks, other speakers and presenters led the discussion on several topics, including the process of applying to NMC, financial aid options for high school students, NMC’s degree and certificate programs, the college’s data collection efforts, a summary of recruitment activities, and other topics.
The conference also featured presentations about scholarship opportunities from Merissa Rasa, CNMI Scholarship Administrator; and William Torres, adviser for the Saipan Higher Education Financial Assistance office.
Those in attendance included counselors and representatives from Marianas High School, Kagman High School, Rota High School, Tinian High School, Hopwood Junior High School, ChaCha Oceanview Middle School, Mt. Carmel High School, Grace Christian Academy, the Division of Youth Services, Workforce Investment Agency, and PSS Human Resources Office. (NMC)
