The Matansa Football Club celebrated its first Youth Football League playing as an organized club last April 5 and 6 where they played against other teams in the recently concluded season.

The Matansa Stingrays was established in November 2007 and is one of the four football clubs that earned Northern Marianas Islands Football Association membership.

The area covered by the Stingrays includes the northern villages of Capital Hill, Sadog Tasi, Puerto Rico, Tanapag, San Roque, As Matuis, and Marpi.

This season the Stingrays fielded six teams with players’ age ranging from 4 to 14 where 72 players all donned the red t-shirt bearing the Stingray.

The MFC held a gathering at the Gregorio T. Camacho Elementary School to celebrate the season in an afternoon of friendship, food and awards. GTC is where the Stingrays held their practices and home games.

The Stingrays would like to thank all the parents in supporting the youth players this season and the entire coaching staff that sacrificed afternoons for practices and every Saturday for games.

The Stingrays will hold their registration in August where all youth under the said villages are invited to register. A women’s team will be added to the Matansa family this fall.

The Stingrays’ Matansa name came from the historical reference of Saipan’s northern slaughter fields. Their coaches last season were Women’s National team member Madison Smith (Under-6); Mike Rueter and Perry Conner (Under-8); John Aldrich and Ray Bulaklak (Under-10); Men’s National team manager John Ravell and Glen Perez (Under-12); Women’s national team members Lindsay Davis (Under-15 girls’) and Brenda Schultz (Under-15 boys’).

Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan is their corporate sponsor with Jerry Tan as the club president and Ravell as the vice president. Christina Smith is the secretary general with Elna Curate as the treasurer.

The Stingrays’ Under-15 boys’ and girls’ teams played against the MP United Football Club and Paire Football Club on Saturday in an end of the season festival at Garapan Elementary School. Results were not available at press time.

On April 19, Saturday, Matansa’s Under-12 team will participate in the final festival of the season.
