Job referrals, not job fairs on Tinian, says mayor

The money that will be used to host a job fair on Tinian will not be “well-spent,” according to Tinian Mayor Ramon Dela Cruz.
“It’s such a small resident labor pool there. I don’t think it’s worth the expense,” said Dela Cruz.
Dela Cruz noted, however, that he prefers to do job referrals for unemployed Tinian residents “rather than put together a job fair that’s going to be attended by very few people.”
The mayor’s remarks come weeks after two job fairs on Saipan by the CNMI Department of Commerce in October and the Department of Labor early this month.
Both events attracted over a thousand U.S. workers looking for jobs, most of which have been announced in accordance to the final rule governing CNMI-only transitional workers.
“As to put together a job fair on Tinian, if I have the money I’ll do it,” said Dela Cruz. “But with the limited budget, I think it’s not necessary.”
According to Dela Cruz, unemployed Tinian residents have been referred to the Tinian Dynasty Hotel & Casino, which remains the biggest private sector employer on the island.
“Dynasty has been very gracious, they’ve been very supportive, and they’re hiring local people,” he said, adding that its representatives always goes to the Tinian High School and encourage graduating students to apply for a job there.
