Website honors servicemembers from territories, FAS
The website of the Office of Insular Affairs now features a section devoted solely to the members of the U.S. military who come from the U.S. territories and the freely associated states.
Called Military Highlights, this new section of the OIA website is intended to raise awareness and showcase the military service as given by those from the U.S. territories and the freely associated states.
“The Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs recognizes that hundreds of sons and daughters of the U.S. Insular Areas currently serve in the War on Terror in all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces. According to estimates, the number of enlistees from the U.S. Insular Areas is much higher per capita compared to those from the U.S. mainland,” said OIA in a statement.
The participation of the men and women in the U.S. military is needed to make this awareness-raising initiative a success.
OIA is asking military servicemembers from the U.S. territories and freely associated states to furnish it with needed information and submit them electronically along with a picture to Tanya Joshua at Tanya_Joshua@ios.doi.gov or Ryan Edgar at Ryan_Edgar@ios.doi.gov.
The information must include the name, age, hometown, rank, assignment, post, enlisted or joined from (i.e. FSM, Guam, Hawaii), and years in service (i.e. 1995 – present).
Servicemembers are also asked to answer two questions: “Why did you join the U.S. Armed Forces?” and “What is your greatest experience being in the U.S. Armed Forces?”
Submissions must include one picture.
