School STUCO nets $150 in Suds for Funds

Close to 30 San Antonio Elementary School students and teachers cleaned cars at Shell’s Suds for Funds car wash event on March 22 at Shell’s Airport Road service station, and raised $150 for classroom supplies.

Rita Carreon, a teacher at SAES and one of the advisers of the school’s student council, which coordinated the car wash, said part of the money would also be used for various school activities. She said they sold car wash coupons at least two weeks before the event and set their goal at $325.

She said that approximately 20 first, fourth and sixth grade students, including nine student council officers and members, and seven SAES teachers participated in the car wash fundraiser, which ran from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Carreon said the students’ parents signed consent forms allowing their children to participate in Shell Suds for Funds.

“It was good. The kids and the teachers enjoyed it. They want to have another one in the future,” Carreon said.

The Shell Suds for Funds car wash event is a fundraiser organized by Shell Marianas, Coca-Cola Beverage Co. (Micronesia) Inc., and Glimpses Advertising for the benefit of non-profit organizations. Glimpses coordinates and publicizes the event; Shell provides the cleaning water, soap, sponges, buckets and tent; Coca-Cola supplies free beverage for participants.

“We’re very thankful that Shell, Coca-Cola and Glimpses put this together. We got donations from Coca-Cola. All the money that was raised went to the school; none went to the sponsors,” Carreon said.

For over four years since October 2003, Shell Marianas, Coca-Cola and Glimpses Advertising have been holding the Shell Suds for Funds car wash event every third Saturday of the month. This has benefited approximately 50 different civic and non-profit groups.

A regular Shell Suds for Funds event is held every Saturday at any Shell service station. Interested groups need to coordinate with the station’s manager, and bring their own refreshment and cleaning supplies except for the water, which is provided by the station.

A special Shell Suds for Funds car wash is held every third or fourth Saturday of the month where a beneficiary is featured in Beach Road Magazine and provided with cleaning supplies and refreshments by Shell Marianas and Coca-Cola, respectively.
