April is Jazz Appreciation Month
Saipan Mayor Juan B. Tudela is scheduled to sign a proclamation today designating April as Jazz Appreciation Month.
The proclamation will be held at the Mayor’s Office Conference room at 10am.
A collaborative effort between the Saipan Mayor’s Office and the U.S. Conference of Mayors, Jazz Appreciation Month observes and pays tribute to the founding fathers of jazz.
Through the efforts of the International Association of Jazz Educators and the American Federation of Musicians, 15 governors and several mayors in the U.S. have issued proclamations declaring April as Jazz Appreciation Month in their jurisdictions.
In 2003, Congress passed PL 108-72 to commend the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History for establishing April as Jazz Appreciation Month, honoring jazz as a national and world treasure to be celebrated by leaders, institutions, educators and communities globally.
Completely genuine, born in America, appreciated worldwide, jazz is a beloved American art form popularized by the likes of Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, and B.B. King.
