State of exigency
Exigency isn’t a word seen very often. At first glance it looks a bit like emergency and then a bit like exit. An exit emergency or an emergency exit? Well, OK, the dictionary says, “an urgent situation.” The good news is that the Board of Regents has “come to life” and is accepting responsibility for this urgent situation and taking action. That is good news!
The concern, however, is to what extent and in what manner can NMC “reprogram, modify, and temporarily suspend certain policies and rules necessary to maintain its accreditation.”? Transparency and accountability must remain the trademarks in all the actions that are taken under this state of exigency. Caution must be taken to stay within policies and procedures, especially in matters of personnel, as this has a recent history of errors, oversights, and perhaps unfair and unlawful acts of seemingly random events. Maybe not so random?
Apparently the regents will now be meeting once a month concerning NMC’s accreditation. Some say it used to be once-a-quarter, so there’s an improvement. As there aren’t really that many months until the accreditation decision is to be made, might it be appropriate to meet a bit more often? At any rate the new committee is no doubt “on it.” And I sure hope that president emeritus Mc Phetres will be asked for her input in this committee. Good luck!
