Former Guam senator Herminia D. Dierking passed away yesterday.

Dierking served as the director of the Bureau of Budget and Management Research under Guam Gov. Ricky Bordallo and was subsequently elected to the 18th, 19th, 20th, 21st, and 22nd Guam Legislatures. She was also a professor at the University of Guam.

“Today our island mourns the passing of former Senator Herminia D. Dierking, a devoted public servant and a leader in our island community,” said Guam Rep. Madeleine Z. Bordallo in a statement.

“As a professor at the [UoG], she touched the lives of many young students. As a former senator and my colleague in the Guam Legislature, she brought insight and knowledge to local public policy. Her contributions to the people of Guam will be remembered through her work as a legislator, a teacher, and as a dear friend to many,” said Bordallo.

“My thoughts and prayers go out to her husband, John, their children and grandchildren, and to her family and friends. Herminia will be dearly missed by all who knew her,” she added.

Guam Gov. Felix Camacho also issued a statement, saying “Our island has lost a beloved leader, educator and public servant who dedicated herself to her island and her people. The former senator will be remembered in our community as a woman of great character who contributed much to our island. Our hearts and prayers go to her family at this difficult time.”
