The Department of Public Safety’s Traffic Section has started using its four motorcycles again for more effective enforcement and to reduce the department’s fuel costs.

DPS Traffic Commander Sgt. Thomas Blas said the four Kawasaki motorcycles had been repaired and are now back on the streets.

“That’s a big thing for us, for the department as a whole because using the motorcycles out there…the agility of the motorcycles to conduct enforcement is very vital,” Blas said.

Driving huge cars in traffic enforcement, he said, would consume a lot of fuel compared to motorcycles.

“The motorcycles will help us in the fuel reduction costs,” said the traffic commander.

Blas said minor maintenance problems were immediately conducted.

“But right now they’re finally back and running and since [Wednesday] I started taking them out for test runs and doing other enforcement,” he said.

DPS Commissioner Claudio Norita said that motorcycle usage is very efficient for traffic enforcers because of the work they perform.

Norita said that for Patrol, the sports utility vehicles are more versatile in off road or back road trips.

“We don’t have the paved roads like in the mainland across the board, so the use of SUVs or 4×4 [truck] is more prudent for them. For traffic officers, using motorcycles are versatile in enforcing traffic laws,” he pointed out.

“Getting in our traffic with motorcycles is easier. Traffic officers need to go out there and go back and forth and the use of motorcycles is cheaper in regards to operations,” Norita added.
