(Ferdie de la Torre) A female Japanese tourist was dragged several meters by a car when she chased a man who had grabbed her bag as she was walking along Beach Road, Garapan, Wednesday night.

Responding paramedics treated the 32-year-old tourist at the scene for extensive bruises on her legs and left arm.

Saipan Tribune learned that a responding police officer pulled over a vehicle near Bank of Guam that matched the description of the getaway vehicle. It was not clear yet whether an arrest was made.

The Department of Public Safety has yet to release information about the incident to the media.

Witnesses said the victim and her boyfriend were walking on the shoulder of the road near Mama Store when an unidentified man who was waiting in the area suddenly grabbed her bag.

The victim and her boyfriend chased the robber, who then boarded a sports utility vehicle that was parked near the Bobby Cadillacs Restaurant.

The female tourist was able to hold on to the door of the front passenger’s side. As the vehicle sped off, the woman was dragged for a few meters until she fell.

Witnesses described the suspect as in his early 40’s, has grayish hair, and bearded. He is believed to have a companion who served as the driver and lookout.

Last June 24, a 70-year-old Korean businessman suffered serious injuries when an unidentified man attacked him with a hammer and robbed him near his restaurants in western Garapan.

The incident occurred near the former Wax Museum of Saipan along Ginger Avenue. No one has been arrested.
