Two men were arrested Monday in separate domestic violence cases on Saipan.

Mashud Rana was arrested for assault with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery, and disturbing the peace. His bail was set at $10,000 cash.

Jameson Hemley was arrested for assault and battery, and disturbing the peace. His bail was set at $1,700 cash.

Preliminary hearing will be on Nov. 23 at 9am for both suspects.

At yesterday’s bail hearing, assistant attorney general Tiberius Mocanu called to the witness stand police detective Raymond Borja, who narrated to the court the circumstances leading to the two suspects’ arrest.

Borja stated that police officers who responded to a report about a domestic violence in Garapan found Rana’s wife crying, her face swollen.

Borja said the victim told police that Rana repeatedly slapped her and hit her with a meat cleaver. The wife did not suffer any cut from the meat cleaver assault.

In Hemley’s case, Borja testified that the wife told police that Hemley punched her face, shoulder, and back at their residence.

Superior Court associate judge Kenneth L. Govendo, who presided over yesterday’s hearing, learned that Hemley has outstanding bench warrants for not appearing in two previous criminal and civil cases. Govendo quashed both warrants, but raised the bail to $1,700 cash instead of $1,000 that the prosecution had recommended.
