Jerry Soriano topped last week’s VFW Post 3457 9-Ball Tournament, the third qualifier for the Battle of Champions.

Soriano defeated Ron Chisato in the finals to gain his second win in the first three qualifiers. Soriano recorded his first victory after downing Patrick Cepeda late last month.

The third qualifier featured nine players with Soriano drawing a bye in the first round and then beating Taylor Watanabe in the second round. Next up for Soriano was Cepeda and the former won anew to advance to the semifinals. In the semis, Soriano beat Chisato, who dropped to the loser’s bracket and had to beat Cepeda to earn a rematch against Soriano.

Cepeda topped Simon Kapileo in his first game in the loser’s bracket and then slipped past Vic Hocog to force the last semis duel against Chisato.

Meanwhile, despite losing in the third qualifier, Hocog has already secured a slot to the Battle of Championships as he prevailed in the second qualifier on Oct. 29.

Hocog won in the finals against Battle of the Champions victor Bryan Neves. Hocog advanced to the finals after beating Watanabe, Soriano, and Neves in the early rounds. Neves and Watanabe settled for second and third place finishes, respectively.

Organizers hold Battle of Champions qualifying tournaments every Saturday for four months with the weekly winners eventually competing in the finale for cash prizes and trophies.
