FGC whips Mobil in GBL IT&E Cup

FGC cruised to its second win in as many games after dominating Mobil, 96-78, during the curtain raiser in the 2011 Garapan Basketball League IT&E Cup last Wednesday night at the Garapan Basketball Court.
FGC and Mobil slugged it out in the first half before Zack Babauta sizzled for the former and connected on a trio of three-pointers for 11 points in the third quarter to turn a 43-37 lead to a double-digit advantage entering the final canto, 73-55.
Lerio Pagarao finished what Babauta started for FGC, scoring eight points in the final canto. Uncharacteristically, Mobil never postured a comeback in the fourth period despite nailing three treys late in the game and dropped to an even 1-1 record.
FGC broke out to a slight 21-16 edge in the opening 10 minutes as Babauta, Banjo Basila, Kae Bernardo all turned in a handful of markers.
The two teams then traded baskets in the second quarter to stay on track. Seven FGC players contributed on the offensive end, while Mobil’s Jun Estolas managed six points to keep his team in pursuit.
FGC continued to play physical defense after the break and forced Mobil to earn almost half of its points from the free throw line in the third quarter. The ploy worked on FCG’s advantage for the easy win in the fourth canto.
Babauta paced FGC with 22 points.
Proa 89, Andhok’s 56
Proa recovered from a sorry loss to Mobil (82-81) in its debut game after crushing Andhok’s in the second match of the night.
Mike Babauta started things out for Proa, making five points in their 14-8 lead in the first quarter. Proa then erupted in the second quarter and pulled away with a 40-21 halftime advantage. Dan Barcinas led the charge with eight markers in the second quarter, while over half of Andhok’s offense came from the free throw line in the period.
In the third canto, James Sablan and Pete Iguel tallied six points apiece, as the count shifted to 64-42, with 10 minutes left in regulation.
Iguel and Marvin Rabauliman took over the game from that point and teamed up for 18 at crunch time. Iguel top-scored for Proa with his 21 points.
Action in the GBL IT&E Cup continues tonight as Blue Haus-Satbahi (0-1) takes on the Ol’Aces (0-1) at 6pm and FGC faces Rebels (1-0) at 8pm.
