Dr. Dan Lamar, the medical director for the Public Health Division, is now a voting member of the healthcare corporation board after being named acting director for Medical Affairs.

His appointment is limited to working with the board and the chief executive officer until a person is permanently named to the Medical Affairs position.

Lamar confirmed with Saipan Tribune that he and one of the hospital’s physicians, Dr. Michael Deary, have agreed to divide the tasks of the Medical Affairs director, with Deary handling internal operations.

Lamar said that he has already attended a series of board meetings since the corporation’s formal takeover of the Commonwealth Health Center on Oct. 1 and has been working collaboratively with its CEO, Juan N. Babauta.

The other members of the corporation board are Joaquin Torres, Pedro Dela Cruz, Roy Rios, Anthony Aguon, and Babauta. One seat representing non-physician healthcare providers is still vacant. The corporation’s chief financial officer also sits on the board as a nonvoting member.

Lamar said the selection of the new member is now being coordinated among staff and is expected to be filled soon.

Lamar said that all current positions at the corporation will remain in effect until modified by the corporation.

Lamar said he does not intend to apply for the post of director for Medical Affairs because he wants to fulfill all his responsibilities as medical director for the Public Health Division.

Lamar succeeded Dr. Shirish Balachandra at the division.

The medical director plays a vital role in the discussion, planning, and implementation of the division’s programs.
