From a three classroom-size space, the Marianas High School theater class will now have a bigger venue for its productions and programs after Education Commissioner Rita A. Sablan approved relocating the program to a much bigger area that could accommodate up to 200 students daily.

MHS principal Cherlyn Cabrera said that Sablan has approved the renovation of the school’s warehouse where separate function rooms will be built: the instruction room, the costume room, and the main stage for all its productions.

Handled by long-time educator Harold Easton, the MHS theater class has produced talents who continue to represent the CNMI in national thespian competitions and bring honor to Commonwealth public schools.

Cabrera said the relocation was the result of the PSS central office moving to its campus, taking up about 14 classrooms, including that of the theater class.

“Mr. Easton was very pleased with the commissioner’s decision because he has now a huge space with his own dedicated stage,” said Cabrera.

Construction is now ongoing. According to Cabrera, the facility, which would be made up of metal, will be appropriate for theater production. Some special installations will also be done to improve sound.
