A fire burned a 1991 Ford Explorer SUV being driven by a woman along 16th Highway in Sadog Tasi early this week, according to the Department of Public Safety yesterday.

DPS acting spokesman Sgt. Thomas A. Blas Jr. said the driver, 45-year-old Susan Lee Marchitti, was not injured.

Blas said the department received the call about the fire Tuesday at 8:02am.

Blas said preliminary investigation conducted by Patrol Officer Murphy Paul showed that Marchitti was driving her vehicle west along Middle Road when she noticed smoke coming out from the hood.

Marchitti immediately pulled over to the shoulder of the road near Mobil Service Station where she sought help.

A male employee of the gas station attempted to put out the fire using a fire extinguisher.

Police and fire personnel were then called after the man failed to extinguish the blaze.

The extent of the damage was not indicated in the report.

Blas said the cause of the fire was an electrical problem.
