Students of Marianas High School can now explore their talents in music following the decision of school management to open the Dolphin Band Program next semester.

MHS principal Cherlyn Cabrera said that band instruments have already arrived and a qualified instructor has been identified to spearhead the program for freshmen, sophomore, junior, and senior students.

Cabrera said the course will be offered as part of the school’s electives and will be housed at the school’s gymnasium. Both the band program and physical education program will be housed at the same site temporarily but Cabrera said a permanent venue will soon be identified for P.E. activities.

Cabrera said they decided to offer the new program due to the interest shown by many students last school year. She disclosed that former principal Craig Garrison initiated the program in collaboration with Saipan Southern High School’s Manta Band music director Will DeWitt. Under the program, students will learn to play classical band instruments; advanced sessions will be offered later depending on the interest of students.

“We’re very excited about this new band program and we’ve been working with Mr. DeWitt on how we can properly develop our program,” she said.

At present, only SSHS has a band program.
