CPA to procure firetrucks for Pacific islands
The Federal Aviation Administration has authorized the Commonwealth Ports Authority to procure eight firetrucks for Palau, the Federated States of Micronesia, and Marshall Islands.
CPA executive director Clyde Norita said this procurement costs some $8 million.
“It includes the purchase and the shipping of the vehicles to these jurisdictions,” said Norita, who met with FAA officials in Hawaii last week.
The Saipan airport would get one of the eight trucks.
Norita said the CPA is contracting with a Winsonsin-based company to manufacture the trucks and ship them to Micronesia.
In a show of confidence, the FAA tasked the CPA two years ago to administer federal grants for Micronesian airports.
This came following the signing of a memorandum of agreement that aims to grant CPA the responsibility to oversee funds for airport improvement projects in Palau, Federated States of Micronesia, and the Marshall Islands.
The agreement came pursuant to these jurisdictions’ newly negotiated Compacts with the United States, which entitled the freely associated states to the federal government’s AIP program.
CPA has been a recipient of AIP funding for several years, while it was the first time for other Micronesian states to get it
The agreement also provides that CPA, at the request of FAA, will assist Micronesian airports “by providing instruction in preparation of applications for AIP grant funds, procurement and bidding, financial controls, legal requirements including U.S. statutory and regulatory requirements, program oversight and general compliance with AIP grants,” among other things.
