Before feasting for Thanksgiving Day celebrations, runners have the opportunity to earn their meals as Northern Marianas Athletics hosts the 2006 Turkey Trot Fun Run tomorrow morning.

According to NMA coaches’ director Elias Rangamar, all interested in getting a fun workout prior to celebrating can begin registering for the event at 5:15am at the beach across the Division of Fish and Wildlife Office in Lower Base.

All interested must pay an entrance fee of $7 for adults and $5 for youth.

Participants will then begin a tough challenge done every year for over two decades at 6am.

The run begins at the registration site, and will end at the peak of Mount Tapochao.

By the time runners reach the finish line, their shoes would’ve already been abused on a course that 4.2-miles long on paved and coral roads leading up to the highest point on the island.

The event features six age categories for males and females, including 12-and-under, 13-17, open, 30-39, 40-49, and 50-and-over.

Like all Turkey Trot Fun Runs in the past, all division champions will win a turkey.

Last year, Stuart Smith and Noriko Jim were the first male and female finishers as 110 individuals challenged and conquered the course. Smith crossed the finish line in 37:11, while Jim clocked in at 40:43.

The event also serves as an NMA fundraiser for the CNMI delegation that will be competing in the 2006 Oceania Under 18/Open Track and Field Championships, which will be held in Apia, Samoa next month.

Members of the team include Jacque Wonenberg, Syl Rangamar, Tyrone Omar, Dexter Dillay, Yvonne Bennett, Nate Mateo, Champ Untalan, and Mel Tagabuel. The team will be accompanied by Rangamar and Ronald Olopai, who will serve as coaches.
