Diabetes walk this weekend
While not everyone is looking to run a marathon, swim around the tanks in the lagoon, or cycle to Marpi and back, just about everyone in the community can take part in the Commonwealth Diabetes Coalition’s “6th Annual Don’t Be A Turkey Walk” this weekend.
Anyone can participate in either the 5-kilometer fun run/walk or the 10-kilometer fun run/walk as entrants travel southbound from the Garapan Basketball Court this Saturday, Nov. 25, and organizers say this year’s event has added significance as it the walk will serve as a tribute to the late Konrad Reyes of the Ayuda Network
Organizers are teaming up with the Saipan Walking Association Inc., the local chapter of the American Red Cross, Mobil, Laolao Bay Golf Resort, Dasani Water, DFS Galleria, and the Family Violence Task Force to provide the community a chance to stretch its collective legs for healthy living.
“Diabetes is a family thing, affecting everyone. Let’s prevent it by exercising at least 40 minutes every day with a walk or jog around the neighborhood or pathway. That keeps diabetes away,” said Robert Torres.
Registration begins at 6am and the cost to participate in the event is a donation of $10, which includes a T-shirt, but the benefits of participation extend far beyond the fancy clothing.
There will also be a free health screening for glucose check and blood pressure and participants will not have to worry about their nutritional needs as organizers will be ready to provide water at the turn-around stations as well as supply of oranges and bananas.
