Gov. Benigno R. Fitial needs to undergo another surgery and is not likely to be back in the Commonwealth by next month, as earlier expected.

Press secretary Charles P. Reyes Jr. said yesterday that the governor’s next surgery has not been scheduled yet. It will depend on how soon Fitial recovers from the previous one held three weeks ago.

Reyes said that the governor had two medical conditions concerning his neck and lower back. The more critical one, believed to be the neck, was addressed during the operation on Oct. 31, 2006. The governor is now preparing for the next procedure.

“He will have the second surgery done as soon as he is ready. As you know, it hasn’t been long since he had the first one. He needs some time to recover. But the next surgery is not as serious as the last one,” Reyes said.

He added that the governor’s return may be further delayed. It was earlier reported that Fitial would be back by December.

Fitial has been out of the Commonwealth since Oct. 4, 2006. Lt. Gov. Timothy P. Villagomez has since been serving as acting governor, while Fitial communicates with administration officials via Internet mostly.
