A gastronomic treat for the man’amko
Thanksgiving came early for the islands’ man’amko when the Rotary Club of Saipan trooped to the Aging Center yesterday and provided free lunch for the elderly.
The Rotary Club also held a free arts workshop for the man’amko, with Rotarian Elly Stoilova leading the arts and craft session earlier in the morning. Stoilova provided the arts materials. The man’amko made Thanksgiving cards out of some recycled materials.
Stoilova said the club added the arts workshop so that the elderly would have something to do while waiting for the food. Through the short activity yesterday, she said the man’amko would be able to give something to their loved ones that they themselves made.
Rotarian Kathryn Barry and her mother, brother and sister-in-law also helped facilitate the workshop while Stoilova’s friends pitched in.
Office on Aging director Howard Macaranas presented a plaque of appreciation to the group, expressing his gratitude for bringing smiles to the CNMI elderly in time for the holiday season.
Rotary Club president Deanna Kelly-Tessen said it has been a tradition for the club to provide this annual treat and also signifies the start of the holiday season.
Rotarian Jeff Boyer spearheaded the event. He said the food was catered by Café at the Park, which is owned by fellow Rotarian Gabe Boyer.
Over 50 of the CNMI man’amko partook in yesterday’s treat. Flora Laitan, a resident of As Lito, said she is very thankful for the food provided by the club. “Thank you very, very much,” she said.
Some of the man’amko shouted while falling in line, “Maraming salamat Rotary! (Thank you Rotary).” [B](Marconi Calindas)
