Juan Pan is Chamber’s new president
Businessman and socio-civic leader Juan “Pan” Guerrero was elected yesterday as the new president of the Saipan Chamber of Commerce.
Guerrero, who is currently a member of the Chamber’s board of directors, will formally assume his presidency in January 2007. It will be his second time to serve as president of the business group. He was first elected to the post in the ’80s. He had also worked as executive director of the Chamber in 1982.
In an interview, Guerrero said he has many plans as the group’s president but he will also push for the continuity of significant programs and activities that the Chamber is already engaged in.
“I have a lot of things in mind. I want to organize them to become effective. I’d like to see some of the issues that the Chamber has been following through. I’d like to see more of the members participating in the activities of the Chamber,” said Guerrero.
He said among his priorities would be to work closely with the Executive Branch and engage it in resolving key issues such as the Commonwealth Utilities Corp.’s privatization.
“I think it’s time we do action than just talk,” he said, pointing out that the privatization issue has been on the table for about a decade now but no concrete action has been taken.
“There’s a lot issues out there that are not getting done,” he said.
Also elected during yesterday’s Chamber meeting at the Saipan Grand Hotel were Alex Sablan as vice president, Jim Arenovski as secretary, and Michael Johnson as treasurer.
Re-elected as board of directors were Harry Blalock, Becky Castro, and David M. Sablan Sr. Completing the fourth slot is Steve Jang.
A director serves for two years while the executive officers serve a one-year term.
Incumbent president Charles V. Cepeda said he opted to serve only a year “to give the others a chance to lead.”
