Youngsters hopping at Hopwood
A couple matches fell off the radar as the Northern Mariana Islands Football Association brought the final week of the regular season to a close as players in both the 8-and-Under and the 10-and-under divisions wrapped up weather-related make-up games at the American Memorial Park.
Both of the games may have previously went unreported but the story of the AMP action has finally found its way to the media outlets as AON Insurance and Marianas Eye Institute racked up wins in the finale.
Coach Elisa Long traded her cleats for a clipboard to lead her AON Insurance squad from the sidelines against coach John Hirsch’s Big Dipper Cone Heads in the 8-and-Under Division.
While his name sounds like the ultimate basketball player, Jordan Butcher-Wade was the difference maker on the soccer pitch as he struck through the defense to find the back of the net in the 1-0 Big Dipper victory.
The dynamic duo of Ada Griffin and Nishata Thomas scrambled between the lines and along the sidelines while kickers Kennedy Izuka and Damien Porras stoked the fires down the center for AON, but they were unable to even the score before the final whistle.
In another exciting 8-and-Under contest, the Marianas Eye Institute strikers focused in on the goal and popped five balls between the pipes to seize a 5-1 victory from the talented Saipan Grand Hotel team.
Coach Greg Borja was on a mission to win, but his passion paled in comparison to Saipan’s bite-sized Beckham, Joel Fevit, who netted four of his team’s tallies. Ryu Tanzawa also checked in with a score, but Fevit was blazing a trail on the Garapan pitch.
Surefooted kicker Kenyon Schultz couldn’t punch one in but teammate Amber Pattillo was able to spoil the shutout for coach Brenda Schultz’s “Vegetable and Beans” Grandies to cap a successful season of soccer on Saipan.
