CNMI residents experienced heavy rainfall yesterday and may see the same bad weather until Thursday, brought about by a tropical disturbance east of the Marianas.

According to the National Weather Service in Guam, radar and satellite imagery shows heavy rainfall over Saipan and Tinian since 4am yesterday.

The Emergency Management Office said the tropical disturbance will increase the chance of showers and thunderstorms across the islands until Thursday.

“Shower activity has been steadily on the increase across all areas with the strongest and more widespread convection over the Rota zone,” said EMO in its special weather statement.

EMO said CNMI residents will experience winds up to 15 miles per hour with scattered to numerous showers.

The agency said long period swells generated by the tropical disturbance, combined with gales (strong current of air) east of Japan will keep small craft and hazardous surf conditions for Tinian and Saipan coastal waters until Friday.

Acting Gov. Timothy P. Villagomez advised the public yesterday to take precautionary measures while traveling through ponds of water, flooded streets, slippery roads and sometimes low visibilities with rainshowers.

“Residents, swimmers, fishermen, and beachgoers are strongly advised to take precautionary measures when venturing near the reef lines due to dangerous surf and rip currents,” Villagomez said.

The NWS warned that excessive runoff from this heavy rain will cause flooding of small streams and poor drainage areas.

“If you will be driving…expect flooding and poor visibilities in heavy rain. Do not drive into areas where water covers the road. Watch for debris on the road,” NWS said.
