Villagomez heads for DOI conference on Thursday
Acting Gov. Timothy P. Villagomez is leaving Thursday to attend the U.S. Department of the Interior’s investment conference in Hawaii.
Senate President Joseph Mendiola is expected to serve as acting governor while Villagomez is off island for the conference, which takes place Nov. 13-14, 2006 at the Waikiki Marriott in Honolulu.
The CNMI delegation includes press secretary Charles P. Reyes Jr., Public Lands Secretary John S. Del Rosario, Finance Secretary Eloy Inos, Commerce Secretary James Santos, and Commerce employee Maggie Camacho.
From the Legislature, those traveling for the conference include Sen. Maria Frica Pangelinan and Rep. Absalon Waki.
House Speaker Oscar M. Babauta said several other lawmakers had expressed interest in attending the event. Babauta himself is not going. “I think we have enough members going. The Legislature is well represented,” he said.
Press secretary Reyes said that the government coordinating its efforts with private sector members who are going to the conference on their own expense.
The 2006 Conference on Business Opportunities in the Islands will include industry experts and local businesspeople speaking on tourism, tourism and real estate development, infrastructure development, tax incentives, utilities and telecommunications, among other topics.
This conference is the latest in a series of events sponsored by the Department of the Interior aimed at stimulating private sector-led economic development in the U.S.-affiliated insular areas.
