3 to lead NMI-wide jobs audit
Three business officials have been elected to head the Commonwealth-wide jobs audit being conducted jointly by the government and the private sector.
Saipan Chamber of Commerce president and Pacific Trading Co.’s Charles Cepeda, Saipan Shipping marketing manager Alex Sablan, and Hyatt Regency Saipan human resource director Josephine Mesta will co-chair the committee leading the jobs audit.
“It was the consensus of the group to let members of the business community take the lead,” said Public Auditor Michael Sablan.
The administration originally asked his office to conduct the jobs audit, which seeks to identify private sector jobs currently held by foreign workers that can be filled by residents.
“The thought was, because this is a study about hiring practices in the private sector, the input of business leaders will be critical. Government agencies will provide resources and support for the study,” Sablan said.
He reported that the jobs audit group was in the process of gathering labor statistics, as well as information on current labor practices and labor laws.
The group’s self-imposed deadline is five weeks away.
Besides the three mentioned earlier, businesses involved in the jobs audit include Pacific Telecom Inc., Joeten Group, DFS Galleria, Tan Holdings Corp., Triple J, Pacific Islands Club, World Resort Saipan, Aqua Resort Club, and Shell Marianas.
The government is the CNMI’s biggest employer, with approximately 5,000 mostly resident personnel. Government payroll expenditures are the largest component of the CNMI budget.
The private sector, on the other hand, employs about 33,000 nonresident workers.
