Obyan Beach next target for rehabilitation project
After the rehabilitation and cleanup of Wing Beach, a group of government agencies and non-government groups are turning their eye—and efforts—to the rehabilitation of Obyan Beach on Saipan.
The Coral Reef Management Office is now working with the Mariana Islands Nature Alliance, Department of Lands and Natural Resources (and their many divisions), Commonwealth Utilities Corp., Beautify CNMI! and Historic Preservation Office for the Obyan Beach rehabilitation.
CRMO, through funding from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services-Pacific Islands Coastal Program, will be doing a similar rehabilitation project as the one successfully completed at Wing Beach.
This is the first grant agreement that MINA will be financially managing. MINA is the co-principle investigator with CRMO on this grant agreement with Fish and Wildlife Services.
Next week, CRMO will be working with DLNR Parks and Recreation and CUC’s Power Division to finish installing used power poles around the designated parking area to prevent unauthorized vehicular traffic from driving on the beach.
“This will allow this important historical and Green Sea turtle nesting site to rehabilitate, or return to a more natural state,” said CRMO’s Kathy Yuknavage.
Funding will also pay for the fabrication and installation of an emergency access gate, revegetation of the eroded drainage, and installation of an information signage.
The exact date and time for the meeting with the other agencies next week has yet to be finalized. (PR)
