The Fitial administration hopes to attract investments in the education and retail industries, among other things, at the upcoming investment conference in Hawaii.

Press secretary Charles P. Reyes Jr. said that the government was hoping to see more shopping facilities, including national franchise stores, in the islands.

“The CNMI could greatly benefit from having more shopping malls, especially nationally recognized franchises. It will be good for tourism, as well as for local consumers,” Reyes said.

He added that the administration continues to “have faith in the education industry.”

But the current leaders are inclined toward privately owned schools, as opposed to a government initiative like the previous administration’s failed Pacific Gateway project.

A committee, composed of government and business officials, is working on a comprehensive list of investments that delegation would focus on at the conference.

The conference, sponsored by the U.S. Department of the Interior, will be held on Nov. 13-14, 2006 at the Waikiki Marriott in Honolulu, Hawaii.

According to the Interior Department, the business opportunities conference will include industry experts and local businesspeople speaking on tourism, tourism and real estate development, infrastructure development, tax incentives, utilities and telecommunications, among other topics.

This conference is the latest in a series of events sponsored by the Department of the Interior aimed at stimulating private sector-led economic development in the U.S.-affiliated insular areas.

The department has hosted two previous conferences and led three Business Opportunities Missions to five island jurisdictions over the last three years.
