Salas back as Little League president

Longtime youth baseball volunteer Joe Salas is making a return to the presidency of the Saipan Little League Baseball Association.

This, after the result of the Little League elections was released yesterday, indicating Salas as the president for the 2007 season.

Salas, who also held the seat in 2003 and 2005 and has served as a coach or official in the Little League program for more than a decade, heads a board consisting of outgoing president Mike Borja, Annie Flores, Roque Celis, Jack Aguon, Thelma Mizer, Pat Tenorio, and Jess Wabol.

Borja, who served as president for the 2006 season, will now serve as vice president, while Flores serves as secretary-treasurer. Flores is the official treasurer of the board, and has also volunteered to fill the secretary slot until another individual takes up the position.

Celis remains as the chief statistician as he will be tasked with keeping records of all statistics of the various age divisions, while Aguon will serve as the umpire coordinator.

Mizer will wear the hat of player agent, Tenorio serves as safety officer, and Wabol is the manager’s representative and public information officer.

Meanwhile, the board announced that it will be holding a general membership next Saturday, Nov. 4, in hopes of getting the ball rolling for the upcoming season.

The meeting will be called to order at 9am at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium conference room.

To be discussed is the kick-off date of the 2007 Saipan Little League season, which is tentatively set for Jan. 20, 2007.

All teams interested are urged to have a representative present at the meeting and provide documents that will serve as age verification. Other documents needed are waiver forms, parent consent forms, and proof of insurance.

Also to be discussed is the hosting of the 2006 season banquet.

Action in the Saipan Little League comprises of competition in the Major League, Junior League, Senior League, and Big League. Games are held at the Oleai Sports Complex, with the Major League competing at the Tan Ge Softball Field, and the Junior, Senior, and Big leaguers showing their skills at the Francisco M. Palacios Baseball Field.
