Palau student wins trip to Manila conference
Shelley Remengesau, who is double majoring in majoring in environmental/marine science and education (secondary); will attend the 6th Pacific Region Investment Conference on Nov. 9 and 10 at the Shangri-la Makati, and discuss the thrust of her paper with the board of the association during the conference.
Remengesau submitted an essay entitled, “Ensuring our Future: A Complementary Environment and Economy.”
She will attend the conference as a result of a stipend from the association, and through the sponsorship of Continental Airlines.
A sophomore at Palau Community College, Remengesau expects to graduate in spring 2007. She is 22 years old.
Yanhua Lang of the Northern Marianas College
Gerard Cruz, chairman of the association, said: “I am delighted that students around the region have seen the importance of financial management of funds. I hope that Shelley will continue in the direction she has chosen, to the benefit of Palau in the future. We need special people to move the legacy of caring fiscal responsibility forward through the generations.”
Executive director Daniel Roland of the association thanked sponsors of the association and the conference for their support of Remengesau, and said that her paper obviously impressed the judges at PCC. “It may well be that in the years ahead this student will be approached to consider public service. I hope that she will consider responsible board membership of a fund as a worthwhile service office. Both public and private sector funds need talented citizens to sit on their boards. Shelley shows the sort of talent our island communities need. I hope to see her serving Palau in the years to come.”
Besides Remengesau and Lang, other regional student winners who will be presenting their papers at the conference, thanks to the association and Continental, are Chester Verango Bataclan of the University of Guam; Erica Chong of Guam Community College; Sergio I. Keller of the College of Micronesia – FSM; and Solomon Motlock of the Marshall Islands College.
