MHS1 beats MHS2 in girls soccer season opener

The Marianas High School Lady Dolphins varsity squad was the first team to break into the win column as the Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization girls soccer season opened this week at the Oleai Sports Complex field.
The varsity Dolphins MHS1 defeated its junior squad MHS2, 4-1, in Tuesday’s season opener, while the Lady Ayuyus of Kagman High School and the Saipan Southern High School Lady Manta Rays settled for a nil draw in Thursday’s match.
On Tuesday, MHS1 jumped all over MHS2, 4-0, in the first half and contained their little sisters to a lone goal late in the final period for a solid win.
MHS1’s Allodia Lumasag streaked through the MHS2 backfield to give her team a quick 1-0 lead less than two minutes after the kickoff.
MHS2 then was carded for tripping in the goalie box at about the 10-minute mark, and MHS1’s Krizzelle Alforez stepped to the line and put the varsity crew up, 2-0.
In the final six minutes of the opening 35-minute half, MHS1’s Jeraldine Castillo and Liezel Tiples each found the back of the net to secure a comfortable lead heading into the closing frame.
MHS1 backed off its press after the recess and focused on defense, however MHS2’s Gida Ogarro broke loose for a goal with about 10 minutes left in regulation.
In Thursday’s match, SSHS came away with the majority of the scoring opportunities, but KHS did a good job as a group clearing out the ball.
SSHS may grow hungrier after its disappointing result, while KHS perhaps took the draw as a moral victory. Either way both teams can use what was taken from the match and carry it with them into their next games.
This season’s girls soccer continues Tuesday at 4pm at the Oleai field with MHS2 hosting KHS.
