The Pacific Games Council has named the sports that will be played in the 2009 Pacific Mini Games in the Cook Islands.

According to Northern Marianas Amateur Sports Association president Michael White, the Council’s sports committee has decided to include athletics, outrigger canoeing, golf, sailing, soccer, tennis, and weightlifting as part of the competition.

He added that sports that are still being considered are basketball, swimming, and cycling.

“They’re going to make that decision next year,” he said.

White also disclosed that mountain biking has been included in the list of approved sports, however, is yet to be included into the competition for next year’s Pacific Games or the Mini Games in 2009.

Among the sports that were rejected include lawn bowling and darts.

The Pacific Games Council had recently decided to make a change in its eligibility rules, now requiring all participants of the Games to be citizens of the countries they represent.

With the new rule, though, several sports federations in the CNMI have expressed disappointment and have opted not to send teams to the Pacific Games to be held in Samoa next year.
