Gov. Benigno R. Fitial’s five-year strategic initiative plan was unveiled at the Marianas Visitors Authority General Membership Meeting held last May 18.

The unveiling cited the need to diversify, enhance our destinations image, focus on growing our travel markets, brand the destination where the CNMI will be competitive and welcome one million tourists by 2010.

“Building our tourism industry will take initiatives from both the public and private entities. Cohesive partnership in this industry is vital to the success of the governor’s vision in bringing in one million visitors by 2010,” said MVA chairman Jerry Tan.

Industry members and stakeholders together with the MVA Board of Directors have looked at this plan extensively to see how the Marianas as a destination can be competitive.

From destination enhancements to niche marketing, this five-year strategic initiative states what the CNMI needs to be upon those destinations that are highly regarded as a “must see” destination.

“Aside from the current traditional markets of Japan and Korea, the five-year plan will also look at emerging markets. China, being the most robust in terms of outbound travel may just as well be the CNMI’s second largest market by 2010,” stated Marian Aldan-Pierce, vice chairman, MVA Board of Directors.

“Our tourism industry is volatile and sensitive to many external and internal factors. External factors are issues beyond our control that exist from the markets we are catering, however, internal factors such as destination enhancement projects, beautification, or simply raising awareness of the ‘Hafa Adai’ spirit, are something we all can do. The saying is true that tourism is everybody’s business. We all reap the benefits as a community as well as any business. It’s an economy,” added Tan.

The five-year strategic initiative plan is available at the MVA Saipan Office for a fee of $15 per booklet if an MVA member and $20 for non-members. Get your copy today, as supplies are limited. We invite the community and businesses to give feedback or comments regarding this plan via email at mva@mymarianas.com or simply fax your comments to 664-3237. (PR)
