The Public School System now employs four military personnel under its Troops-to-Teachers program.

Education associate commissioner David Borja said the schools hope to recruit additional individuals before the next school year opens in August.

“We just started this program. We already have four service members working as teacher aides. We hope to encourage more who have interest in making education their new career,” Borja said.

Launched in the Commonwealth in April 2006, the Troops-to-Teachers Program provides recently discharged military service members in the CNMI the opportunity to serve as part-time tutors in the Commonwealth’s public elementary schools, while attending college full time or part time.

PSS initially targeted to recruit 20 former service members into the program.

The Troops-to-Teachers Program was originally created by the U.S. Department of Defense in 1994 to assist eligible military personnel transition to new careers as public school teachers.
