Salty Boyz Kings of first round
The Salty Boyz became the official sultans of slow-pitch swat over the weekend as they emerged from the five-team Budweiser King of the Diamonds Softball Tournament on Sunday by defeating a talented UIC squad, 6-2, at Dan Dan Softball Field.
The Boyz bested Chura, the Bombers, the Ngiwal 79ers, and UIC during the two-day affair on the ridgeline to join the defending champion No Ka Oi squad with one of the four qualifying slots in the finals.
Salty Boyz coach John Andres was on hand at MARPAC headquarters in Gualo Rai yesterday to pick up his team’s spoils of softball as each player on the team earned a Budweiser equipment bag.
The competition was tough, but the organizers raised the level of difficulty by banning homeruns and utilizing flight restricted balls to level the playing field.
While the equipment bags are nice, the Salty Boyz were happier to earn their slot into the All-Saipan final that will determine who will represent the home team on home turf later this year when the best teams from Guam and Palau come to the CNMI to determine the 2006 King of the Diamonds.
MARPAC/Budweiser sales manager Melvin Tenorio thanked Continental Airlines for helping to sponsor the tournament and said that he was pleased with the turnout.
Organizers said that they are looking forward to seeing even more teams competing for the final two slots for the All-Saipan tournament this July and September.
Registration for the second round softball-athon is already open, and applications are available at MARPAC in Gualo Rai. Teams are limited to a maximum of 15 players each, all of whom will receive complimentary hats and t-shirts, and the registration fee is $100.
