Mateo, Qudsi fleet afoot for MGOC
Nate Mateo and Laila Qudsi rose above the competition along the cart path and across the driving range to post the fastest times in the 6th Micronesian Games 5km Fun Run, Walk, and Crawl on Saturday during Family Fun Day at the Laolao Bay Golf Resort.
Mateo finished first overall atop the 58 runner field that weaved though the fairways and greens of arguably Saipan’s most beautiful golf course to smoke everyone with a blistering time of 19:41.26, while Qudsi beat all women by crossing the line at the 29:23.50.
Veteran Caesar Danao came in second place overall at 20:06.55, followed by Chris Santos (20:24.69), Yoshi Suzuki (20:47.65), and Robert Jordan (21:19.26) to round out the Top Five men, while Kanae Quinn (29:58.22), Connie Camacho (32:10.23), Nicole Lebria (35:11.34), and Jellian Majors (36:49.53) did the same for the women.
While only one person was able to cross the finish line first, athletes from the CNMI, Guam, Chuuk, Kosrae, Pohnpei, Palau, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Kiribati, and Yap were the real winners of the event as it raised an additional $580 for next month’s Micro Games.
All of the runners also received vouchers good for commemorative pins that can be redeemed once the shipment arrives on island.
Two months ago the Micro Games Organizing Committee offered the first fund-raising run for the Games at the American Memorial Park, and this time a number of athletes from the CNMI’s baseball, softball, basketball, track and field, swim, canoe, and other teams were on hand to stretch their legs on course to show their support for the fund-raising effort after MGOC officials called them out.
